The headline did make me do a double take :

"Couple arrested at airport after trying to smuggle baby in hand luggage "

There are strange, sometimes unbelievable stories in the news. Depending on which paper or website I am reading I usually skim over the ones that are not to my interest, but this one caught my eye. Apparently, a couple were attempting to smuggle their 5 month old baby through an airport, when the security scanner spotted the baby in their hand luggage. 

It was at this point that Lady Bracknell 's voice entered my head and I'm having trouble getting it out again. 

Clearly, it was a very dangerous thing to do and not having a visa for the child seems a bit of a lame excuse for doing it. I hope the baby has not suffered any detrimental effects of any radiation from the x ray machine - and also that this is not the catalyst for a lifetime of claustrophobia.
I understand from the report that that this happened in United Arab Emirates, but of course the line is immaterial.

The good news is that at least this child has not been 'born and bred in a handbag" which as we know  displays contempt for the ordinary decencies of family life and reminds one of the worst excesses of the French Revolution.



Let's hope that this child does not grow up to form an alliance with a parcel and marry into a cloakroom ... ...

That's unbelievable! Was the baby sedated so it didn't cry?

Don't know whether it was sedated or not.
Maybe it had been told to go to sleep till they arrived - make the journey seem quicker !

How did they expect to get away with it? And I hope the baby really was theirs and not a stolen one.

The One Where the Mother Feels Useless

Post cycle 3 chemo - Day 6 We are half way through the chemotherapy - and when I say 'we' of course I mean Jane, who is as strong, amazing and more beautiful than ever.  With each session of drugs so far, it seems to take longer than last time to feel normal again, though of course real "normal" won't be for a while yet.  The drugs in the chemotherapy treatment so far are  f luorouracil  (also called 5FU) e pirubicin c yclophosphamide docetaxel  (also called  T axotere ®)    (FEC-T from the initials of the drugs name)   The side effects include risk of infection, bruising, feeling or being sick, diarrhoea, sore mouth, anaemia, loss of appetite, taste change, hair loss, sore eyes, skin changes and of course,desperate tiredness and aching bones.  This is what I am watching my daughter suffer, and this is why I feel useless. Arriving at Manchester Airport recently to re - enter England / United Kingdom of  Great Britain and Northern Ireland / European Union I was faced with the option  of  two queues for passport control  - EU or Non EU. My passport looks like this and so I do know that I am classed as EU (despite having 2 conversations in the streets in Istanbul about what type of money the British use. It seems that many non EU citizens can not believe that we do not use the Euro and wanted clarification that GBP is still in existence).  I had traveled within the EU using this newly issued passport, but not taken much notice of  the symbol of the bio metric facility on it.    ePassport gates are automated, where a passport reader and camera, rather than a border officer - in theory -  verifies your identity and checks your ‘chipped’ passport.
