The Beginnings & Beginnings - Kipling (1917) Gunning (2008) D-Day 2025

I came across this poem in a discussion online and was not as familiar with this as other "War Poetry", so looked into it's background. The discussion was a debate on the topical and political climate as it appears to the "public" in the UK today and the current Prime Minister's statement this week that "We are on a war footing". And today, on  81st anniversary of the Normandy landings,  D-Day.  The Beginnings It was not part of their blood,     It came to them very late   With long  arrears  to make good,     When the  English  began to hate.   They were not  easily  moved,      They were icy-willing to wait   Till  every  count  should  be proved,     Ere the  English  began to hate.   Their  voices  were even and low,     Their eyes were  level  and straight.   There was  neither  sign nor show,...

Seventy Five Years On - "I Am Neveen" - A Palestinian Child's Story

Image
The Nakba - the "disaster" or "catastrophe" was the destruction of Palestinian society and homeland in 1948 and the permanent displacement of Palestinian Arabs. The term is used to describe both the events of 1948 and the ongoing occupation of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as their displacement in refugee camps throughout the region and beyond. The Nakba was the result of the partition of Mandatory Palestine after World War Two ended as the United Nations and world powers realigned the borders of the Middle East.  The following story is by Neveen Abuelola, my 'step -niece' through marriage. I am reblogging this from when she first wrote it, around 2012 I am Neveen. I am Palestinian. This is my story. This is the Palestinian Story. I'd like to take you back to 64 years ago, to the fertile rolling hills of Palestine. To the land of orange, lemon and olive trees, to around mid May1948. My Grandmother, heavily pregnant qu...

Twelve Years On - When Will We Ever Learn ?

Today, 11th September 2013 is the 12th anniversary of the attacks on USA that killed almost 3,000. I would not dream of making a comment on how the family and friends of those people felt then or feel now. No words could ever justifiably describe the horror and devastation. We remember that awful event swearing that we will never allow anything like that to happen again. Hundreds of  human beings obliterated forever and hundreds more injured and maimed. We usually recall specific major terrible events by noting what we were doing at the time that we heard the announcement. For my generation that is often when President Kennedy was killed, when John Lennon was killed, when Diana (then Princess) was killed.   My parents generation remember the announcement of the start of WW2 and also the ending. All these events involved the unnecessary deaths of ordinary people - yes of course, even the ending of a war, where we in Britain rejoiced, while others died in the most ter...

Beginnings

Things are not good when I don't post blogs for days on end , then post a poem !! Well at least am in "thinking a bit" mode . Beginnings I watched them rub the twigs until a spark flicked into flame And then they took the rock and carved the spear to hunt the game A stone was fashioned in a round to move the carcass of the beast While the fire burned on and all prepared to engage in the feast. And the sun shone down. I saw them take the branches from the trees and make them bend to blast the sharpened sticks to wherever they could send a message to another, that told them – “ keep away from here; this territory’s ours and your presence is too near “ And the rain fell softly. Still as I looked they turned their thoughts towards machines. Their works became more powerful in their minds and in their dreams. And the world was changing faster than each man would dare to think, As they searched for more yet somehow moved away from a joini...
